A landscape designer of Emerald was selected as the recipient of the student and the up-and-coming designer of Open Garden Victoria (OGV)-a prestigious award, in which her garden design “The Sustainable Sanctuary” of March 26, 2025 is presented at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MifGS).
The scholarship that offers up to 10,000 US dollars for the design and installation of a garden at the OGV stand is awarded annually to support emerging talents in the horticultural and garden design sector.
For Natalie Back, the lively Earth design from her house headed to the picturesque Dandenong area, the news was a complete surprise.
She remembers the moment she received the news.
“I was in Woolworths in Emerald when I received the e -mail,” said Ms. Back.
“I turned to my partner and squeaked: 'I won!' It is an honor and a massive step for my business.
The garden of Ms. Back, “The Sustainable Sanctuary”, is inspired by the Australia's unique climate and focus on sustainable practices such as water protection and the support of the local wildlife.
Their design shows indigenous plants, water smart principles and a strong emphasis on soil health, which have been carefully selected to reduce water outflow and to offer insects and animals habitat.
“One of my main goals was to create a garden that feels connected to the natural world, with elements such as grass and plants that fluctuate in the wind,” she said.
“In the garden it is not just about looking nice. It is about creating a room that feels alive, dynamic and calming. “
The design also includes sound and movement, with the intention of conveying a feeling of escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
“I want people to experience a feeling of peace when visiting people,” she said.
“This is a garden for the withdrawal – a place where you are connected to nature again and can take your time to be easy.”
Dr. Karen White, Chairman of Open Gardens Victoria, praised Ms. Back and noticed his thoughtful balance between beauty and sustainability.
“Natalie's entry noticed through its peaceful color palette and sustainable elements, which are so important for today's changing climate,” said Dr. White.
“This award is part of OGV's commitment to support emerging talents and the expansion of garden experiences throughout Victoria. We are pleased that Natalie's design is brought to life at MIFGS. “
Ms. Back's 'Sustainable Sanctuary' will be a highlight of the OGV exhibition on the 2025 show, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors who are interested in sustainable gardening and landscape design.
The garden aims to inspire individuals to take into account the advantages of biological diversity and water -efficient rooms in their own houses and at the same time to promote a deeper connection to the environment.
For MS Back, the opportunity to share your passion for sustainable gardening with the wider community is a dream that has become true.
“It's about showing people that gardens can be both beautiful and sustainable,” she said.
“Gardens like the sustainable sanctuary can offer joy and serenity and at the same time support our planet's health.”
The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2025 will take place from March 26 to 30 in the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton.
