West Jefferson, Ohio (TMX) – A woman and a toddler are dead after the vehicle joined a retention pond on Thursday evening, officers said in Ohio.
Shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday, Witnesses saw a Jeep Cherokee 2016 in a west direction in the US 40 and Park West Drive in West Jefferson when he went from the street into a retention pond.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, three adults and two children were in the vehicle.
The West Jefferson police also reacted to the scene, and three officials and a soldier immediately set off to pull the victims out of the water while the fire brigade was still on the move.
“Her selfless and heroic actions focused exclusively on the preservation of life and demonstrated the best public service and the courage under pressure,” said Brandon Smith, police chief of West Jefferson. “One of the officers is currently in the last few weeks of the field training.”
Oshp said the driver could extract himself. An adult and a 5-year-old child were saved before the vehicle sank. The remaining adult, 27-year-old Kelita Alfred and a 3-year-old child were then pulled out of the vehicle and taken to a hospital in Columbus, where it was declared dead.
The other adults were not injured and the 5-year-old was brought to the nationwide children's hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Our thoughts and warm prayers remain with all those affected. Events like these have a deep influence and we are together as a community,” said Smith.
The crash is examined.
