I read with great interest the January 5th article about solar energy (“Solar Energy Reduces Daytime Electricity Demand on New England’s Electric Grid”). Across the East Coast, we face the same demands to meet increasing demand for electricity, and we are meeting some of that demand through solar and offshore wind.
It's worth noting that some voices in the new government argue that wind and solar energy must be excluded from the grid. No convincing reason is given for this argument, and such an exclusion would make it far more difficult to prevent blackouts caused by demand exceeding electricity supply. With nuclear fusion more than a decade in the future and climate change a real thing, it would be foolish to put all of our energy needs in the fossil fuel basket. Fossil fuel advocates, of course, advocate for exactly this, out of pure financial self-interest.
Let’s be sensible and stay open to the enormous potential of clean energy to save money and keep our lights on. And let's formulate our laws and regulations so that there are no barriers between us and this clean energy.
