What is in Trump's comprehensive new tariff plan?

President Donald Trump presented new tariffs on Wednesday, which the White House described as a “liberation day”.

“In my opinion, this is one of the most important days in American history,” said Trump during a press conference in the rose garden outside the White House. “It is our explanation of economic independence.”

Here you can see how the tariffs affect the prices you pay.

The fresh round of tariffs – the allies and enemies were equally met with tariffs up to 50% – also included smaller trading partners and marked a significant escalation from previous levies that have been hit on some foreign goods in the past few weeks.

The plan includes the basic tariff plus higher prices for some countries

The new tariffs have two important guidelines: a uniform tariff of 10% for all imports and “mutual” tariffs that are imposed on many nations that perform the tasks for US imports.

The universal 10% tariff corresponds to a far -reaching commercial barrier that touches every product that enters the USA

Trump said the measure would make sure that foreign companies pay a price for services that are derived from the purchasing power of the US consumers.

“Foreign nations will finally pay the privilege of access to our market,” said Trump.

In addition to the universal tariff, Trump said, the United States will impose many countries that raise US goods. Trump described such tasks as “mutual tariffs”, although he found that the USA would impose tariffs on half of the trade barriers beaten on US products.

“We will charge you about half of what you are and have accused us,” said Trump. “We are friendly people.” He later added in his comments: “This is not fully mutual. This is friendly.”

The step deviates from Trump's statements in the past few days to impose mutual tariffs that correspond to the trade barriers of other countries.

In which countries will mutual tariffs see?

The mutual tariffs will address around 60 countries that were identified by the Trump government as “worst offenders”, said officials from the White House.

The White House calculated the cumulative costs of trade barriers that were imposed by each of the target nations, including tariffs and non -monetary measures. In any case, the USA will impose a mutual tariff rate with 50% of the level that is attributed to a specific country.

As part of the “Mutual” tariff plan plan, the United States will impose the following taxes for goods that were imported from the following countries to these tariffs:

  • China: 34%

  • European Union: 20%

  • Japan: 24%

According to the US trade representative, both China and Japan were among the five most important importers in the United States. China delivered more than 536 billion US dollars in 2022 and Japan delivered more than $ 148 billion. The total value of those imported by the European Union were more than 553 billion dollars in 2022.

The mutual rate of 34% for China is in addition to an earlier tariff of 20% that Trump has hit the nation, which brings the effective tariff tariff for one of the largest trading partners in the United States to 54% overall.

What is not covered by the new tariffs?

Mexico and Canada – two of the largest trading partners in the United States – are not affected by mutual tariffs. Waren who fall under the free trade contract in the USA-Mexico-Canada will continue to see no tariffs, while the non-USMA goods are already subject to a tariff of 25%, which Trump announced last month.

In addition, some have not been subject to the new mutual tariffs, including steel and aluminum imports, which are already under a tariff of 25% last week. Mutual tariffs also include no copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and wood.

When will the new tariffs be effective?

The universal tariff of 10% will be effective on the morning of April 5, and the mutual tariffs will meet products on the morning of April 9, said officials from the White House.

Economists largely expect tariffs to increase the prices for US consumers, since importers usually pass on a share of the tax burden in the form of higher costs.

“For decades, the United States has reduced our trade obstacles for other countries, while these nations use our products massive tariffs,” said Trump.

“All of this happened without the reaction of the United States – none at all,” added Trump. “But these days are over.”
