According to the Chronicle Herald, a destructive invasive fish was discovered in eastern Canadian waterways.

What happens?

The Loach pond, also known as an oriental weather fish, was discovered by the Nova Scotia Invasive Species Council in the Lahave River near New Germany.

Pond pain can spread quickly because they are asexual and can breed young people all by themselves. As a bottom feeder, you can also survive in water in water and can even live out of water for a short time.

“We don't know if there are others. We definitely don't hope,” said Council Supervisor Ken Donnelly, according to The Chronicle Herald.

Why are invasive species important?

Invasive types are typically brought into new environments through human activities. If you survive, you can outperform local species. This is because you are no longer subject to the control and compensation with which you have developed.

Over time, you can monopolize key resources such as food and habitat and push out local species. This leads to a decline in biological diversity and harms ecosystems. Damaged ecosystems already cause damages hundreds of billions of dollars every year.

According to Donnelly, climate change makes the introduction of invasive species even more likely.

“These habitats change, dryness and wet change. There is a connection between climate change and invasive species, and that is an important factor,” he said, according to The Chronicle Herald.

Ponds were also found in a variety of US states, including Georgia, Illinois, New York and California.

What is done with invasive species?

Donnelly said that the Teich Loach found in Nova Scotia was probably unloaded there by an aquarium owner. This is a practice that he advises against because it can introduce invasive types wherever the dumping happens.

The risk is why the Nova Scotian Law contains fines for the release of house fish to the wilderness. Fortunately, this is the only sign of such a release in the province.
