Mohonk Preserve is a popular hiking selection for locals and visitors to the Hudson Valley and for good reason!
As early as 2019, Mohonk Preserve began the news that a popular pond in Preserve would soon have to be assessed due to changes in the local environment. Well, we will be available soon.
What happened to Mohon's duck pond?
Enterpond is an intimate little stop in several ways towards Mountain House. The spot is so popular because it is accessible to everyone, from Avid Rock Scramblers to the latest hiker. When you come to the duck pond, you will also get a nice view of the Sky Top Tower, which protrudes between mountains and trees.
In addition, there are always fascinating wild animals that you can see outside of ducks in and around the pond!
Mohonk Preserve went to Facebook as early as 2019 to share: “At the moment we see dramatic changes in our beloved duck pond. We have to deal with the failing dam, assess the infrastructure and develop a renovation plan.”
The infrastructure that supports the duck pond was created in 1908. No wonder that the changing landscape in connection with the age of the infrastructure causes some problems.
The problems were actually recognizable in 2018 after the existing dam failed, which meant that the water level of Duck Pond drops sharply.

According to Mohonk Preserve, the reduced water level “[exposed] several difficult defects. The water level started cycling due to a broken drain valve, the inlet dilment and the accumulation accumulation in the water sheath. “
What does the future think is the duck pond?
When the New York DEC examined the area, they found that “a non -repairable drain valve, a considerable water on the toes of the dam and a critically deteriorating overflow road, all of which could lead to an upcoming failure of the dam.”
Initially, many were concerned that the duck pond could become an abandoned project or that it would simply be filled. However, Mohonk used the help of a professional engineering office to find a new solution for the upcoming downfall of Duck Pond.

In the following you will find renderings about what the duck pond may look like in the future.
Mohonk Preserve has already taken steps to restore the dam. Duck Pond was drained in autumn, so that a new “gravity siphon” could be used to maintain the water level. Local plants are restored by their houses.
Mohonk Preserve shares the next steps of “Creation of a highland wet meadow with ponds, beaver analoga and a connected current, keep access to the carriage road and develop pedagogical programs.”
We look forward to seeing what comes from the latest improvements at Duck Pond, and are honestly only glad that the pond is restored!
