Located in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, an exceptional native garden will open its doors to the public for the first time later this month as part of Open Gardens Victoria.
Nakari is a stunning four acre garden situated at the highest point of Narre Warren East, offering stunning 360 degree views.
The 21-hectare site, once owned by former deputy prime minister Dr. Owned by Jim Cairns, it is now a family home for owners Rex and Elaine, who commissioned award-winning landscape architect Phillip Johnson to undertake a bold transformation of the property – clearing much of the original site for a fresh start.
Just four years later, sloping paddocks and a leaking dam have become a thriving, climate-specific garden committed to best environmental practices.
A stream now flows through the property, feeding a billabong, a naturalistic waterfall, and a restored dam.
Large dolomite boulders from the Mansfield Quarry dominate the space, while vibrant native flora attracts pollinators and birds, and frogs call in spring and summer.
Rex and Elaine have planted 6,500 native trees across the expansive property, creating windbreaks and wildlife corridors that will preserve the landscape for generations to come. And there's even a playground for the couple's grandchildren – it's one of those special gardens where there really is something for everyone.
βItβs a space designed to harvest water, care for wildlife and evolve with the seasons β but most importantly, to help people fall in love with nature again,β says Phillip.
Visitors are invited to experience this inspiring private sanctuary for one weekend only starting November 22nd.
Take a tour with Phillip Johnson and shop at local businesses like Vaughans Native Nursery and Specialty Trees, who will also be on site with special displays.
