North Battleford – Giant Hysop to relieve lung complaints and buffalo methods to treat sore throats and colds.
A healing garden is now growing behind all Sapp gallery in North Battleford to educate young people and all visitors about medical plants that are located on the levels and local grasses.
“We encourage people to come and take medication they need, watch the logs and make sure that they leave enough for others,” said Leah Garven, curator/manager of galleries for the city of North Battleford.
The garden was planted a few years ago by permacultureist Elizabeth Bekolay.
“It makes a lot of eco-formation and garden design,” said Garven.
Some of the medical plants bred in the garden include Buffalo Sage, Horse Sage, Rose Hips, Wild Bergamot, Zedern and Giant Hysop, to name just a few.
Garven said that many of these plants were historically processed into medical teas, or some could be used in a connection and applied to a wound for healing purposes.
“It is a wonderful capital in the neighborhood and in programming and offering the gallery,” said Garven from the garden. “We don't always have programs that go out there, but this is certainly a place where people can discover and have another small amenability of free venue in our city.”
In addition to all plants and grasses for educational purposes, the healing garden has identification signs.
The garden also offers a place to promote pollination to improve the ecosystem. It offers a strong habitat for pollinators traveling through the area.
“The focus is more on the pollinators and the importance of pollinators for maintaining our earth,” said Garven. “By crossing all of our plants, trees and our plants, they are really critical in this environment.”
The healing garden was planted for the first time 13 years ago and had to be planted again in recent times due to some construction work in the region.
“It was planted in autumn 2023 so that it really reached its climax to establish and flourish,” said Garven.
