International consortium reveals the airport proposal
A new chapter for the International Airport Athens unfolds with the design, which is unveiled by the Anemos Consortium, a team under the direction of von von GrimshawPresent Hapticand Athens is based K-studio. Work with BuiltLeslie Jones, Triagonal and Plan A, the architects take over an ambitious expansion that will increase it AirportThe capacity of 26 to 40 million passengers by 2032. In phases and within the complexity of an active airport environment, the project aims to transform itself Athens International airport to a travel center that equal and expressed the layered identity of the city.
The project, redesigned by K-Studio and employees, recognizes its own relatively recent history. The airport was built by Hochtief and opened in 2001 before the 2004 summer games and is currently 20 kilometers before the capital's main center. The design of the design team integrates both the expansion and the renovation – the main and satellite terminal buildings, upgrading the infrastructure of Landside and Airside, Gate lounges, aircraft and retail zones. The new design does not try to extinguish what is already there, but to strengthen and enrich it.

K-Studio draws from the spirit of Athens
As part of the K-Studio's proposal and its international partners, the international airport from Athens becomes a ship for history, material culture and the rhythm of the life of the city. A pragmatic layout ensures easy use, but the soul of the project lies in its attention for experience. With natural materials, landscape integration and a generous infusion of daylight, the design Athens reflects as a city that has been built for thousands of years and gently layers over the form. The aim is to feel unmistakably locally without affecting the global efficiency standards.
Sustainability is another driving force behind the International Airport in Athens in Athens. K-Studio and its employees make up the architecture with the NET zero destinations of the AIA and the LEED gold goals. Passive design strategies are paired with low -carbon materials, modular design techniques and energy -efficient systems for water and waste. Instead of treating the environmental performance as subsequent thoughts, it is embedded in the architectural DNA right from the start.
A new western facade has stone fins and sculptural portals to lead the passenger flow
A colonnade facade and oculus interior
A remarkable addition to the main terminal building is its newly defined western facade-a rhythmic, colonnade-like elevation, which is articulated by stone fins and interrupted by six sculptural portals. This new Landside identity for the International Airport Athens, which was designed by K-Studio and Team, offers a feeling of arrival and orientation. Inside, the increased LAIBs floods the check-in and departure room with diffuse sunlight and intensifies the intuitive navigation in which the most stressful zone of an airport usually.
The redesign of the airport also leads two haunting, bourgeois “Oculus” rooms one moments of the architectural drama, which serve as meditative counterpoints for the busy terminal flow. The north -oculus, which was designed as a lavish, circular Mediterranean garden, rises to a height of 24.5 meters and acts as a great assembly room. Passengers who come from Airside encounter a green microcosm in the city's public life. The South Oculus now takes an intimate tone with graded terraces, dining areas and sunlight, which cascaded through a raised ceiling.
Two large oculus rooms bring light, gardens and bourgeois scale to the terminal experience.
''Athens is a spectacular city that has recorded an enormous increase in visitor numbers in the past ten years, far beyond what its existing airport can conveniently support'' says Andrew Thomas, Managing Partner, Grimshaw. ''In response to this challenge, we were looking forward to working with Athens International Airport to create a courageous new vision that retains and renews the existing terminal building and at the same time adds a number of important new extensions to create a unique new architecture. Our design is inspired by the city: an airport that reflects the past, present and future of Athens, a celebration of his architecture, hospitality and culture. '
