Taneytown Park staff explain repairs, storm damage and event plans; Repair claim filed for $34,000
Park staff updated the advisory board on completed and upcoming park improvements, erosion control work and storm-related damage that require a contractor schedule and insurance claim.

Work underway or planned includes a paved path from the pond path to the dog park and paving in the dog park entrance area at Roberts Mill Park, installation of riprap on the east bank of the pond where erosion has brought the waterline 4½ to 5 feet close to the path, as well as planned repairs to the pump track at THS Park and realignment of the basketball court at Roberts Mill Park. The board was also informed that new black slatted memorial benches have been installed at Roberts Mill and Bollinger parks.

Lorena reported that the new surface at Neo Station in Memorial Park was damaged by a large tree branch during an April 19 storm and that the repair estimate is about $34,000. “This pavement is expensive. We filed it as an insurance claim because it would cost about $34,000 to repair the damage,” she said. The staff explained that small patches were not feasible for this surface; A larger repair area and a larger binder application are required, increasing costs.

Staff said a contractor (Hobbs) will install the paved dog park path and entry gate when weather permits. Riprap will be installed to protect the eroding shoreline near the proposed trail; Staff noted that funding to replenish existing bank fill further along the coast is not currently available and will likely be requested next year.

Board members discussed work on the pavilion ceiling and concrete floor at Memorial Park. Staff said Pavilions 1, 3, 4 and 5 had ceilings installed, but Pavilion 2 would require excavation to install a concrete floor and that staff may be able to take advantage of donated or discounted construction work. Staff also noted that deer browsing has impacted the success of Pollinator Meadow plantings in Bollinger Park.

No formal action was taken; The discussion was an operational update and planning meeting.
