The parade of destructive storms formed in the Gold Coast hinterland yesterday afternoon and rolled north.

Helicopter footage showed the roof of a home coming off, leaving the kitchen exposed to the elements and a resident on the destroyed back patio shocked at the damage.

In an update this morning, Energex said about 95,000 customers were still without power, down from a peak of 162,000 yesterday.

Moreton Bay was one of the hardest hit regions, with 54,000 people there alone without power.

“As of 5.30am (AEST), more than 600 power lines were down and Energex counted more than 880,000 lightning strikes during the storms yesterday,” Energex said in a statement.

“Power restoration is likely to continue until late Wednesday in some areas due to the extent of damage and difficult accessibility.”

The utility urged people to be careful when clearing debris as it could obscure downed power lines.

Locals were seen dragging fallen trees from the road to clear a path.

The storm only lasted a few minutes, but also caused extensive damage in other parts of the region.

A roof came off a gas station and blew into power lines in Beaudesert and hail, some the size of cricket balls, flooded backyards from Cornubia south of Brisbane to Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

11 centimeter hailstones each fell in Manly, Ferny Hills and Alexandra Hills, while 14 centimeter hailstones were recorded in Chandler.

A carport collapsed in Loganlea, taking down power lines and forcing two people to escape through a neighboring fence.

A major clean-up operation was already underway yesterday afternoon after the State Emergency Service received more than 1000 emergency calls by 6pm, mainly in Brisbane, Redlands and Logan.

Severe thunderstorm warnings for several regions were lifted last night.

The storm came the day after the area south of Brisbane was hit by golf ball-sized hail on Sunday evening, caused by a supercell that thundered across the Scenic Rim and Logan, Weatherzone said.
