Geneva, Switzerland, December 1, 2025 – STMicroelectronics has added VIPerGaN65W, a 65-watt flyback converter, to the VIPerGaN series that combines a 700V GaN transistor and a quasi-resonant PWM control IC in a single QFN 5×6 package. The new VIPerGaN65W complements the previously announced VIPerGaN50W and expands the possibilities for customers to develop high-quality, cost-effective USB PD chargers, fast chargers and auxiliary power supplies that ensure an excellent user experience.
The flyback controller of these converters operates in quasi-resonant mode with zero voltage switching (ZVS) up to full load. Valley skipping optimizes efficiency under medium to high loads, with ST's proprietary valley skipping eliminating noise at audio frequencies, ensuring silent operation. With frequency foldback at low load, the converter goes into burst mode when idle to reduce power consumption to below 30 mW to comply with eco-design.
The integrated gate driver is precisely tuned to the parameters of the GaN transistor, saving designers from adding external components to optimize switching, helping to reduce time to market, increase power density and minimize bill of materials. A high-voltage starting circuit and a SenseFET for accurate current monitoring are also integrated.
Like the VIPerGaN50W, the new VIPerGaN65W features advanced power management features that improve performance compared to traditional flyback circuits. There is line voltage feedforward, which prevents the output power from increasing excessively with changes in supply voltage, and a dynamic blanking time, which limits the operating frequency to minimize switching losses. Input and output overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, and brown-in and brown-out protection are also integrated.
The EVLVIPGAN65WF evaluation board is available to explore VIPerGaN65W features and initiate customer projects. The board implements a 24V/65W isolated flyback converter with secondary side synchronous rectification that can operate on any AC input voltage from 90V to 265V.
The VIPerGaN65W converter is now produced in a 5mm x 6mm Power QFN (PQFN) package and is available on eSTORe and through resellers starting at $1.19 for orders of 1000.
