AfriSam's long-standing commitment to excellence and innovation in the built environment was again underlined at the 24th Construction World Best Projects Awards, where several projects using its construction materials were recognized for excellence.
As one of the founding supporters of the event, AfriSam also sponsors the AfriSam Innovation Award for Sustainable Construction, recognizing the need to promote and support sustainability. The company's continued collaboration reflects its commitment to promoting best practices, sustainability and quality in the South African construction industry.
H&I's Malmesbury Bypass – Special Mention
Among the recognized projects was the Malmesbury bypass in the Western Cape, a large-scale infrastructure initiative being built by leading regional contractor H&I. The project received a special citation for its contribution to strategic infrastructure development under the National Infrastructure Plan 2050, which focuses on the Saldanha-Northern Cape development corridor.
The project will begin in March 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in January 2026. It includes 6.7km of new greenfield roads, extensive bridges, ramps and an agricultural underpass that will streamline traffic and increase safety around the town of Malmesbury.
AfriSam has partnered with H&I as a key materials supplier, supplying a range of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete from its Rheebok quarry north of Malmesbury and Peninsula facility. These were used for filling and shift work as well as for the construction of five prestressed double rib deck bridges and an agricultural underpass. Approximately 14,000 m³ of ready-mix concrete was delivered for these structures.
The technical complexity of the project – from extensive cut-and-fill work in hilly terrain to crossing rivers and wetlands – demonstrates the technical expertise and material quality required for high-performance infrastructure.
Market Road Bridge by Teichmann Structures, Pietermaritzburg – Special Mention
Another highlight was the continuous pouring of concrete at the Market Road Bridge in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, which received a special mention for its precise planning and execution.
The bridge was built for SANRAL by Teichmann Structures as part of Grinaker LTA's New England Joint Venture and is part of a major expansion of the N3 motorway. AfriSam delivered the 1,300 m³ of ready-mix concrete required for the 103 m long bridge deck, delivered in 218 truckloads during a single overnight pour in April 2025.
Pouring began at 8pm and ended in the early hours of the morning, allowing the road to reopen at 6am – all without incident or delays. This operation features logistical precision and quality results, contributing to one of South Africa's most important freight corridors.
Concors Oxford Parks Block 2A Phase 1 – Highly Commended and Special Mention
AfriSam also celebrated recognition for the Concor-built Oxford Parks Block 2A Phase 1 in Johannesburg, which received a Highly Commended Award in the Contractor Category and a Special Mention in the AfriSam Innovation Award for Sustainable Construction.
The Oxford Parks project is a benchmark in sustainable city building, demonstrating energy efficiency, responsible material selection and innovative design practices in line with the principles of green building. AfriSam's low-carbon cement products and concrete solutions played a critical role in achieving the project's sustainability goals.
