Vijayawada: The state government, which wanted to complete 1.55 Lakh Farm Tonds, has built 50,000 so far with Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR), Parvathipuram manyam and Annamayya District.
According to Panchayat Raj and the rural development commissioner VR Krishna Teja, 7,566 farm ponds were completed in the ASR district, 6,317 in Parvathipuram and 5,181 in the Annamayya district.
Krishna Teja called Farm Teiche as 'Sanjeevani' of agriculture and said that they enable the cultivation of plants such as papaya, banana, guaven and curry leaves. Fish breeding is also possible in them, he added.
Since the state is being pursued on the state before the monsoon rain, the commissioner asked farmers to breed vegetables along the pond boxes in order to achieve additional income.
He said that seeds for vegetables and leafy vegetables are distributed as part of the National Rural Employment Garante Scheme (Mgnregs).
The Panchayat Raj and the Commissioner for Rural Development found that each pond can save up to 1.80 LAKH liter water, and together the planned 1.55 -lakh ponds can hold almost 1 TMC water.
Every pond that was built free of charge for farmers among the Mgnregs saves around 50,000 rupees in the construction costs.
