Northern lights dazzle Nevada after powerful solar flare

Northern Nevadans experienced an unexpected celestial spectacle Tuesday evening as the Northern Lights lit up the sky – a rare treat so far south.

The vibrant greens, purples and reds were the result of the most powerful solar flare yet in 2025, sending waves of charged particles toward Earth. The event was powerful enough to push the Aurora Borealis far beyond its usual Arctic range.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G4 geomagnetic storm warning earlier in the day, warning that impacts would be felt across much of the northern United States

According to NOAA, the storm is expected to be “severe” on Wednesday, November 12, “strong” on Thursday, November 13, and “minor” on Friday, November 14, as the disturbance gradually subsides.
