Kolkata: An English student in the third year at Jadavpur University, which was saved from a campus pond on Thursday at 10:15 p.m. in an unconscious state, when he was taken to a hospital near the university.Anamika Mondal, 22, a resident of Nimta, was entertained with classmates in the evening. Later she became in the water body near Tor No. 4 next to the union room. She had come on the campus to visit 'Ruhaniyat' organized by the Jadavpur University Drama Club. The event was to be completed at 8 p.m., but continued until 10 p.m. After death, the drama club canceled the program on Friday.A preliminary autop app on Friday said that death was due to drown. There were no external traces of injury on the body. A Viscera test is carried out to check whether it has consumed alcohol or another intoxicating substance. The students were of the opinion that anamika could have gone into the washroom behind the union room and accidentally got into the pond. “We were made aware of the screams of another girl who discovered two hands that protruded from the water during the washroom,” said one student. When students and security officers brought them out of the water, anamika no longer reacted.“An announcement about a medical emergency was made, and we hurried to the union room and found it there. She had no pulse and was foamy,” said Sneha Nandi, an ex-student who also took part in the event. Anamika was declared dead when arriving at the hospital at 10:26 p.m.The police received no complaint about foul games and has registered a case of unnatural death. Police officers have statements of half a dozen students and witnesses who were present at the site, including the girl who saw her in the water body for the first time.“It seems that it may not have completely control. It was a narrow way that led to the toilet. It could slip and fall into the pond,” said a police source. Cops also check feeds of three CCTV cameras that are installed near the gate number 4.The incident worked on the campus community with many teachers and students who were concerned about the “complete lack of vigil” on the campus. The police said they were talking to the organizers of the event to find out why they were continued until late at night and why a few lights were eliminated in the area.Pro-VC Amitava Data said: “It is unhappy to lose a clever student. I think we have to take stricter measures. There are security concerns because we have no reasonable security personnel. We wrote to the government to wake up more and install the installation of CCTVs. We will talk to the deans and civil servants to find out how the incident happened. “Anamica's death took place two years after a student died in the first year after a fall from the balcony on the second floor of the main hostel in August 2023. The cause of death was tossed. In 2022, a former student of the architecture department drowned in a pond on campus after playing Holi with friends.
