Seoul, South KoreaPresent September 12, 2025 / Prnewswire/ – Hanwha Power Systems in principle (AIP) received from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the construction of ammonia -burning material – Gasturning Constructures for the construction of ammonia fuel for shipping (ABS) 174k LNG airlines at Gastech 2025. This performance is the result of a joint development project between Hanwha and ABS, which was defined August 13, 2025And Hanwha Power Systems successfully completed the design and security check of the core design in a short time.
Ammonia, consisting of nitrogen and hydrogen, does not emit carbon dioxide when burning, which makes it a promising alternative fuel for achieving carbon neutrality in shipping. Hanwha Power Systems develops a ship's drive system that works in small quantities on 100% ammonia without pilot oil (ignition fuel).
In the context in which the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set the goal of reaching carbon neutrality in the international marine industry until 2050, and introducing specific environmental regulations, the ammonia guest turbine is considered a technology that opens up a maritime market for zero-carbon maritime.
After a thorough review and approval of documents for essential engineering, including the process drain diagram (PFD), the operating and control philosophy and the equipment list, the general arrangement (GA), the machine arrangement (MA), the detection of toxic areas, the emergency shutdown system (ESD), fire protection instructions and the hazard -Identification report (MA) granted. This approval officially confirms compliance with international security standards for ammonia -driven ships, as certified by ABS.
With this AIP, Hanwha Power Systems has secured the foundation to suggest retrofitting packages for the conversion of various shipping types, including existing LNG wearers, in ammonia fuel. The company plans to strengthen its position on the global market for ship decarbonization through extended cooperation between shipowners, shipyards and classification companies.
