According to Scottsboro City Council President Keith Smith, nighttime hunting has become a problem on Goose Pond Island.
“The island is full of deer,” Smith said.
According to Smith, who brought the issue to light at Monday's City Council meeting, he received reports of people hunting on the island after dark. He said people saw lights and heard gunshots.
“Some people got their vehicles stuck there and had to be towed,” he said. “It is dangerous and we could be held liable if someone gets hurt. Not to mention it’s illegal to hunt at night.”
Smith said a request would be made to the game board to monitor the area and enforce the laws.
On Monday, council also heard from Mike Kirkland of the Scottsboro Swim Team about improvements needed to the pool.
Kirkland estimated the cost would be around $10,750, including a concrete slab and walkway, building a pavilion and installing a door. The $2,000 landscaping cost will be covered by parent volunteers, Kirkland said.
Kirkland said he would like to see the improvements implemented by July.
