Preparation for the vacation seems to take more and more effort these days. There is so much to organize before you leave the house at all, and last but not least, ensure that all of your beautiful container plants have access to water while walking. I spent hours bringing my inside, putting them in the bathtub or moving them into shady spots to keep them alive in summer. But now I have found a much more effective solution: Terrakotta Water Spikes.
Irrigation pikes, also known as irrigation tips, gradually free water towards the roots of their container plants and need less than five minutes to set up. These cone-shaped devices, which were often made from terracotta, work similarly to Ollas garden (an old self-confident trick, in which a terracotta system is buried under the ground). The difference is to use an irrigation tip, the amount of water that gets your plants is clearly visible and easy to revise at any time.

Terracotta water peaks are incredibly easy to use and make them a good choice for beginners who want to improve their irrigation plan. They work by inserting into the ground, placing the tip near the root of your plant and building a bottle of water into the funnel. The water is gradually released towards the root when it is time for aquatic plants when the soil begins to dry and ensure that your plants have a sufficient water source.
Michael Clarke, landscape architect and horticulture, explained it in more detail. “Because terracotta is porous, the water seeps slowly through the sound into the surrounding soil. When the floor dries out, it pulls more moisture out of the spike and when the floor is moist, the release of water slows down.

It is important to note that terracotta irrigation tips are not particularly long or deep, so they would have difficulty grasping deeply into the ground if they are used directly in a flower bed. However, this makes them the perfect summer companion for their container plants. As soon as the bottle is empty, you can have an easy way to measure how much water your plants drink with the changing season.

How long the water in its terracotta irrigation tip will take depends on a series of factors, including the large tip, how large the bottle of water is, which has been put into the top, the type of soil in its containers, the type of plant in which they pour, and the climate in which they live.
Experts say that irrigation tips are usually irrigated for three days when irrigation of systems in hot weather. Certain types of plants prefer terracotta irrigation tips.
“Terracotta water peaks work best with plants that like consistent, moderate moisture in the root zone,” says Michael. 'Vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, zucchini, salad and leafy vegetables as well as potted flowers and decorative kidney such as Petunia, geraniums, impatiene, begonia, Calibrachoa and Fuchsia are some examples.
“Inside room plants such as peace lilies, ferns, spider plants, pothos, philodendrons and calathenes as well as herbs such as basil, parsley, coriander and mint, will also work well with the method of Terracotta Spike, to release water.”
It is best to avoid using terracotta irrigation peaks for cacti and succulents as well as in large flower beds. One or two small detours are not enough to keep everything, so they adhere to containers of plants that do not make up moisture for the best results.
