The architects of Casa El Pastical take on an intuitive design process that emphasizes the connection between the built environment and nature. In a place of immense beauty and scale, the fragmented volume of the house is almost effortlessly embedded in the landscape. Instead of getting up to the site, the building adapts to it, either gently sinking into the ground or rising and turning to grasp distant views. This careful manipulation of the topography enables the structure to merge with the environment and at the same time maintain the natural properties of the location. The overall concept prioritizes a balanced dialogue between the existing landscape and the proposed architecture.

Design of Casa el Pastical, the Architect In Diez + Müller, position the entrance along a lower point in the country, where a side climb leads visitors to the house. From a distance, the vertical elements of the structure come into view and gradually reveal the complete design. The journey to the house is a dynamic experience in which the movement and observation of the huge surrounding landscape develop naturally.
The design of the apartment focuses on the passage between the room and creates an emotional journey that invites the view of the landscape from various top of views. One of the biggest challenges of this huge website is to ensure that the experience of the user remains intimate and justified. The architecture offers spaces for calm contemplations in which the residents can separate from everyday life. The circulation through the house reflects the experience of the external landscape – inviting breaks and moments of reflection. When light and shadow play over the surfaces, the rough textures and imperfections of the materials are revealed, which gives the rooms character and depth. The materiality and construction systems of Casa el Pastical are selected to adapt to the specific challenges of the location. The design prioritizes flexibility, plasticity and durability and reacts to the unpredictable conditions of the Andes equatorial climate with 3,200 meters above sea level. Supporting walls support large, increased rays that take up to twelve meters, which makes the structure a considerable weight, while large earth volumes are integrated on their plates.
This function enables the creation of green areas on the house and promotes the vegetation that continues to combine architecture with the country. The relationship between interior and outdoor spaces is defined by large, open areas that blur the border between inside and outside, which creates a spatial fluid ability, which is contrasting with the solid mass of the concrete structure.
