Following our previous visit to Studio MM, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Los Angeles this week to explore the work of Bunch Design.
From its La Cañada Flintridge office, the company has built a portfolio of “thoughtful, creative and unique” projects, with a “strong emphasis on the inventive use of materials, the qualities of light, the use of structures and the relationship between them.” Space and its users.” Recently, the company’s Hollywood ADU project was recognized at the 2024 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards.
At Archinect Jobs, the company is currently looking for a Lead Architect to join its team in Los Angeles. For candidates interested in applying for a role or learning more about the company's performance, we have compiled four Bunch Design ADU projects in the city that exemplify the company's ethos.
Hollywood ADU, Hollywood, CA
The Hollywood ADU was designed to accommodate retired parents on the main floor while housing a home office on the upper floor. The 1,000-square-foot ADU on the ground floor includes living spaces, while an exterior staircase leads to a 400-square-foot office space that features balconies with views of the Hollywood Hills and surrounding trees.
Located near the Hollywood Grove Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ), the design respects the architectural context by combining modern craftsmanship elements with wood materials and complementary massing. Strategies such as clerestory windows and integrated courtyards enhance the sense of space and create a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Echo Park ADU, Los Angeles, CA
Located on the back of a 5,000 square foot lot behind an existing home, the Echo Park ADU features one bedroom and one bathroom. Designed with high ceilings and large windows, the project utilizes side setbacks in the courtyard to create courtyard views. The structure consists of two rectangular plaster volumes, slightly offset, providing shade and privacy by blocking views of neighboring properties.
Exterior plasterwork complements the adjacent Craftsman cottage, while wooden ceilings and floors create a warm interior atmosphere. A linear skylight improves the flow of space and guides residents through the room. “The combination of views, materials and use of outdoor space results in a small house that you never tire of,” the company states.
Elysian Cottage ADU, Los Angeles, CA
Located in Solano Canyon near downtown Los Angeles, the Elysian Cottage ADU is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom project that combines modern design with warmth and intimacy. A ceiling made of clear Douglas fir emphasizes the linearity of the house and creates a feeling of spaciousness. The 45-foot-long structure was positioned to ensure privacy while protecting a 60-year-old walnut tree, while clerestory windows reveal views of Elysian Park.
Designed on a tight budget, the 750 square meter space maximizes functionality with mezzanines and reclaimed materials. Japanese influences appear subtly in elements such as reclaimed kimono boxes and a slatted closet door, reflecting the owner's heritage while maintaining a rustic, handcrafted aesthetic.
Silverlake ADU, Los Angeles, CA
The Silverlake ADU sits on a narrow, 25-foot-wide lot behind a front building whose history is tied to the silent film era. The owners wanted to convert an existing garage and studio space into a functional and inspiring art/work environment. The design adapts a prefabricated ADU to the site and includes wraparound clerestory windows that create a floating roof effect, enhancing natural light and openness.
A central skylight provides varying daylight patterns and views of the surrounding palm trees. The simple kitchen is designed for easy use, while the bathroom is discreetly positioned yet has natural light. Large openings at the front and back connect the interior with small landscaped courtyards, improving the connection to the outdoor areas.
