Lively flowers and creative designs will be the focus this weekend when the Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club presents its annual flower show.

The event called National Garden Club Standard Flower Show takes place in the Lions in the Armstrong Park on 731 Exposition Drive.

The event hours are on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday 1pm to 4pm. Admission to the event is free for the public.

According to Nancy Phillips, a long -time member of the Garden Club, this year's event contains the topic of “What's Cooking”, in which the participants include joint kitchen facilities in their designs.

“You can decorate table accessories such as a napkin holder, a candle holder, a placemat or everything a dinner accessory is,” said Phillips. “We use our own plants, fresh plants and dried plants. We don't buy things.”

Phillips said that the show is divided into three categories: horticulture, design and botanical art.

Participants in each section receive tapes based on their designs. Your work is checked by professional judges.

“There are several ribbons and a larger band in every class,” said Phillips. “We have plaques made of wood and if you get one of the big ribbons, your name goes on the badge.”

Phillips encourages everyone to take part in the flower show and say people always have a good time at the event.

“For everyone who comes to the event, they are always very surprised to see all exhibits and all copies of different plants and roses,” said Phillips. “They say that they never knew that the flower show was so big.”

“There is something to do on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon and it is for the family,” she added. “Husbands come, grandpas come and people are really interested in flowers.”

The Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club has been active with a history of community participation and donations for 96 years.

According to Phillips, the club collected 1,800 US dollars this year in its annual plant sale to donate to local organizations.

The club meets on the third Tuesday of the month in the Lions. It has 23 active members.
