A rare white-eared night heron has been rescued in China, a conservation success story that shows the power of local community action.
The story, reported by CGTN, began when a villager named Tian Ruzhong found an injured bird in his yard after it crashed into a power line. That single phone call led to a huge discovery. Forest staff were shocked when they identified the bird as a highly protected species and released it into safe waters after two days of care. This was the first time the white-eared night heron was recorded in the province.

The heron is considered by HeronConservation to be the “most endangered heron in the world,” with only about 1,000 adults remaining. Its population has been destroyed by deforestation and hunting.
