Exhibition of 'Dancing Flowers' opens in the Design Museum

A slight installation of “Dancing Flowers” was exhibited in the Scotlands Design Museum in front of an exhibition on gardens.

Shyillel can be seen for the first time at V&A Dundee in Scotland, with the opening of Garden Futures: Designing with nature in May.

The installation of movement and light designed by the Studio drift based in Amsterdam is inspired by plant biology and flowers that close their petals at night.

The 11 individual shylights consist of the staircase and the input foyer of the museum on the ceiling and consist of several silk layers and driven by robotics.

The sculptures were created by the Practice Studio Drift (Jane Barlow/Pa) based in Amsterdam.

You can see dancing when opening the ceiling, repeating the flower of a flower and then closing at different times and withdrawing upwards.

Caroline Grewar, program director at V&A Dundee, said: “The arrival of Shylight at V&A Dundee brings a fascinating new way of enjoying the building.

“The sculptures of the 'dancing flower' offer a moment of calm and contemplation when they resurrect and fall gracefully and for everyone you see creates a completely unique experience.”

Shylight will be exhibited until August 19, while the exhibition garden futures: the design with nature from May 17th to January 25th, 2026 lasts.

Lonnke Gordijin, co -founder of Drift, said: “The design idea behind Shylight is inspired by 'Nyctinasty', a concept of plant biology that describes the physical reaction of plants to changes in light, in which certain types of flowers close their petals at night to maintain their resources.

“The Shylights reflect the cyclical nature of the plants and encourages the audience to take into account the constant transformation of the natural world and our place within this day.

“We are very pleased that Shylight is exhibited in the world -famous architecture of V&A Dundee and for the first time in Scotland.”

Previously in cities and museums around the world such as London, New York, Helsinki and Hamburg and on a permanent exhibition in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Shylight can visit in V&A Dundes Locke Hall.

V&A Dundee has expanded this year's exhibition program to include four more free displays, the design of the games and the dance floor, the Scottish fashion, the groundbreaking medical care and innovation as well as an exhibition that examines the history of the Palestinian dress.

The design dance play, which takes place from February 22nd to April 27th, offers an “entertaining and accessible way to understand more about game design, the dance floor and the power of the game,” said the museum.

From March 12th to April 18, a fashion display with the title “Icons of Style” will be shown, which is opened with the new two-part series with the same name on BBC IPlayer with broadcasters Kirsty Wark.

From May 3 to September 14th, it will be followed by an exhibition with the ceremonial of nursing, community and medical innovations to celebrate Ninewell's Hospital in Dundee.

The exhibition thread reminder: embroidery from Palestine will open on June 20 and run until April next year.

On the collections of V&A and the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit, it is based on “Visitors in the history of the Palestinian dress”.

Leonie Bell, director of V&A Dundee, said: “Our program tells stories about design, new innovations and the cultural heritage of design and its effective role in our lives from our city, from the whole of Scotland and Great Britain and from all over the world.

“It is a celebration of the power of design and creativity in all of our lives, fires imagination and curiosity for all of our visitors.

“With a variety of free exhibits and installations, we all invite you to inspire everyone from the museum and our common world of design.”
