California State University has published the draft of an environmental impact report for the Campus master plan of San Jose State University in San Jose, Santa Clara County. The plans aim to significantly expand the school institutions, the accommodation of students and employees as well as the facilities on the South Campus. The construction is expected to take place over a period of twenty years in four phases.
The master plan will expand the current campus capacity of 7.86 million square foot to 10.55 million square feet. The process includes the demolition of 1.06 million square feet of existing systems and the construction of 4.75 million square feet of a new area. Further work includes renovations of 1.6 million square meters of existing institutions. The document states that the school is retained the existing parking capacity of 8,400 cars.
The proposal stipulates that an additional 1.9 million square meters of living space are created, including 900,000 square meters for 2,100 beds and one million square meters for a thousand apartments in the alquist renovation project.
After completion, SJSU estimates that the number of enrolled students from 35,475 in 2019 can increase to 44,000 students in 2045.
A further development and improvement of the sports facilities is expected for the southern campus of the SJSU, while nothing similar is to be expected for the campus in the city center. The largest proposed infrastructure change is a beautified Paseo that connects the 7th Street with the existing stadium for the SJSU Spartans football team. Another welcome advantage are plans to replace the chain link fences around the fields with decorative fences, structures, landscape design and trees.
The California State University of California is the leading agency for this EIR design. Since the EIR draft is now published, the city has initiated a public review phase that lasts until March 3. this year. Further information on the EIR and the submission of public comments can be found here on the CSU website.
