This residential renovation and expansion project in New Orleans combines modern functionality with respect for the city's architectural heritage. This is a remodel of an early 20th century shotgun duplex home that retains its historic charm while adding a modern two-story addition to the rear. Known locally as “Camelback“The two-story addition is intended to contrast with the original structure rather than mimic it. This careful balance maintains the integrity of the home's history while providing the conveniences of modern living.
The addition was deliberately designed to stand out from the original form. Rather than mixing or imitating the structure's early 20th century details, the design highlights the home's evolution. The original shape of the shotgun is preserved, the historical details have been carefully restored and testify to the craftsmanship of its time. Meanwhile, the new rear mass adopts a modern aesthetic, providing a clear demarcation between old and new. This contrast serves a functional purpose by framing a side entrance to the house while adding a striking architectural feature.
The addition also includes a wraparound roof design that frames an exterior gate and leads to a newly landscaped backyard. This outdoor space has been raised to match the height of the main house, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Unlike typical sunken courtyards that feel disjointed, this elevated space transforms into a vibrant extension of the home's common areas. A large, multi-sliding glass wall in the rear unit allows natural light to penetrate the interior while visually extending the living space into the garden, promoting a feeling of openness and integration with the outside world.
The renovation significantly increased the footprint of the house, growing from 1,285 square meters to a total of 2,000 square meters. This includes 1,300 square meters on the first floor and 700 square meters on the second floor. Each unit retains its duplex functionality and features two bedrooms and a staircase leading to the upper level. Despite the lack of space, the design manages to balance functionality with a spacious, light-flooded interior.
The lower levels of both units benefit from the open plan design which enhances natural light and air circulation. Retained hardwood floors throughout the original structure honor the home's heritage, while the new addition introduces modern materials and finishes that complement the historic elements. This thoughtful interplay of old and new creates a harmonious living environment that celebrates both history and progress.
The design places emphasis on creating a functional, livable space while preserving the historical use of the building as a semi-detached house. By reinterpreting traditional elements such as the raised courtyard and incorporating modern architectural features such as expansive glass walls, the renovation breathes new life into the property. The project is an example of how modern additions can enhance historic homes without compromising their authenticity.
This renovation respects New Orleans' architectural heritage while adapting to modern needs. The result is a home that is as practical as it is beautiful – a residence that bridges the past and present, offering a space that feels timeless yet entirely of its time.
