Whether a baseball stadium, a ballet theater or a museum, Big (Bjarke Ingels Group) always has a bit of your sleeve. The Hungarian natural history museum is no exception. Big won an international competition to design the 23,000 square meter institution, thanks to its innovative concept, in which three country bands create a new room for science.

The future museum will climb out of the forest floor in the second largest city of the Great Forest of Hungary in Debrecen. With its green roofs and charred wooden facades, the museum will fit into its surroundings and at the same time provide light and bright exhibition halls for the permanent collection.

In a way, the museum, which is designed as partially sunken surface, becomes a fundamental part of the landscape. In view of the function of a natural history museum, it is suitable. Accessible on all sides and filled with open places and winding forest paths, it opens up new common rooms. It enables visitors to see the connection between science, architecture and nature.

“We introduced ourselves to the Hungarian Natural History Museum as an integrated part of its environment, both of which are shaped and designed by the landscape,” said the big partner Hanna Johansson. “From the mass wood, the building has a facade made of charred wooden panels from the region that arise from the ground and blur the boundaries between architecture and wilderness.”

Inside, the spacious exhibition areas formed by the ligaments are the perfect setting for wonderful displays of dinosaur fossils and other natural materials. In addition to five permanent galleries and a temporary exhibition room, the museum has a library and a restaurant that offers a look at the Forest -Baldachin. In the following, workshops, scope and research laboratories for students, families and employees organize in a learning center.

While no official construction time bar was given, it should be open until 2030, as it is part of another plan to position Debrecen as a hub for education and culture at this time.
