Unable to expand outward, the team had to maximize every square inch of the 50-year-old, 17,000-square-foot building's interior space to accommodate a dense and highly technical program, including more than 600 pieces of laboratory equipment.

One of the biggest challenges was integrating all of the necessary building systems into five existing mechanical mezzanines, each limited to a height of 7 feet between the floor slab and deck. The team accelerated the demolition to enable laser scanning early in the process and provide precise as-built conditions for the design of the systems.

Highly efficient air source heat pumps with heat recovery support both heating and cooling, setting a benchmark for sustainable laboratory design in urban environments.

A concrete masonry vivarium within the existing building includes an in-situ concrete deck with more than 250 coordinated penetrations. Intensive pre-planning ensured that all structural work, penetrations and expansion joints in the wall were precisely installed to meet strict structural and environmental performance requirements.
