The Anemos consortium, consisting of Grimshaw, Haptic, Athens, in K-Studio, Arup, Leslie Jones, Triagonal and Plan A, was appointed to design the expansion of the International Airport Athens (AIA). The project will increase the airport's capacity by 2032 from 26 to 40 million passengers through a gradual program in a live operating airport environment.
The International Airport Athens was originally designed by Hochtief and completed in 2001 for the Summer Olympics in Athens 2004. It is the largest airport in Greece and is 20 kilometers from the city center. The expansion project takes into account the current architectural context of the airport, which proposes within the master plan letter and changes to the main building (MTB) and the satellite terminal (StB). The scope also includes updates from Landside and Airside, planes, gate seat seats and commercial space.
The union of the existing airport with the new elements is of central importance for the design concept: an airport that reflects the past, present and future of the city. This is led and influenced by a reaction to the spirit of Athenian life, the architecture and materiality of Athens and the celebration of a city that is anchored with time layers. Pragmatic in the layout, which ensure simple operation, efficient trends and intuitive paths, a feeling of the place will penetrate, with a rich landscape strategy, a cohesive and natural material range and an infusion of daylight in all parts of the terminal building.
The design will also build on the AIA net operations and the carbon commitments in the entire life and take passive design principles, low carbon structures and materials. Modular efficient construction systems and renewable energy, waste and water systems. The project is aimed at a Leed gold standard.
On the north to south axis, the design for the MTB runs a new land idea in the west. An independent, repetitive and modular facade that creates a “lifted” inner colonnade is defined by stone fins that extend over the structure. Due to the overlap of this rhythm, six new portals, contemporary, light, but different stone shapes that offer a order and scale that leads passengers in the new check-in/departure hall. In the hall, the newcomers are also raised, which gives the daylight deep into this busy transition room, prioritizing passenger navigation, river and access.
Two new unforgettable Athenian moments as part of the design are North and South Oculus, target points and new living spaces that expand the existing structure and are accessible via active, flowing, rhythmic street spaces, balconies, VIP lounges and trading zones. The North Oculus is the main room, a rich Mediterranean garden in a 24.5-meter-high circular, graded spatial-one band, which immediately impresses and justifies the experience of the terminal and the city beyond. Entering the northern Oculus of Airside on the ground floor experiences passengers a microcosm of urban life – the hospitality of Athens – a memorable moment with an architectural language that flows and leads the eye to certain environments over the MTB.
The South Oculus is another lifting area in which, in addition to smaller f & b units, creating a unique and unforgettable experience in which there are three terraced levels around an atrium room with generous seats and an extensive landscape design. The daylight is also distributed across the room, which offers longer prospects over the terminal and navigation to the departure.
As part of the construction suggestions, the STB will change the function in a dedicated additional Schengen facility with considerable operational and spatial changes. The passenger circulation areas of the building with the MTB via a tunnel are significantly improved, including the integration of the atrium space, which according to the principles of the MTB brings daylight into the function of these rooms and ultimately improves the experience of the passenger.
The strategy for delivery in the terminal buildings emphasizes a program for changing and expansion, which is transformative and at the same time minimizes the disruption of the existing facilities.
