USA. Design company based in Santa Monica, California In the Akar studio says Areas-operated restaurant and bar Novecientos Grados by Tony Hawk will be a focal point of San Diego International Airport Terminal 1's new expansion when it opens in September 2025.
Areas US is developing the project in collaboration with Tony Hawk and celebrity chef Claudette Zepeda.
As an integral part of the new terminal structure, the restaurant and bar areas in the departure area of the terminal wing will occupy approximately 5,000 square meters.
It will include an island bar, a dining area overlooking the asphalt and an outdoor terrace. The flagship food and beverage restaurant's design is inspired by San Diego's urban skateboard parks and historic district.
The restaurant's different spaces will connect and flow into each other while maintaining their individual design identities, Akarstudios said.
Conceived as a sculptural form, the bar's architectural design includes a series of curved ramps covered in colorful artwork and suspended above a cantilevered steel roof.
The front of the bar will feature illuminated glass panels printed with vibrant Mexican embroidery patterns, providing a greater sense of connection with the city's historic district.
The double-height dining space will utilize the terminal's high glazing to provide transparency to the outside. Colorful skateboards are mounted on a hanging canopy to add additional visual accents.
The outdoor terrace will be visible from the main bar, providing a visual connection to the indoor spaces. A fabric canopy with festive fairy lights and low-slung seating creates a desirable patio perch that offers expansive views of the city skyline from the rooftop terrace.
Retail and self-ordering stations will be positioned throughout the restaurant space with custom artwork, enabling visible connectivity and enhancing the ordering process.
Design details include blackened steel beams and posts, printed wood panels, colorful skateboards, concrete pendants, laminated glass panels and seating with various finishes, as well as materials such as textured fabrics, concrete surfaces and skate ramp panels.
Akarstudios is a multidisciplinary design firm working in various fields including architecture, interior design, branding and lighting design. The company also created the branding and logo design for the Novecientos Grados.
