After Jamie and Kara Hartnett had lived in McLean in McLean for several years, they were set to his defects. They did not use the formal dining room, the terrace was too faulty to entertain it, and the kitchen was too small for its six sixth family gathered. Case Architects & Remodelers fixed these problems at the end of 2023 by creating an open kitchen and an informal dining area associated with a spacious veranda.
The new veranda is surrounded by written off windows on three sides and enjoys nature. Clear vinyl window panels protect against the elements in bad weather and push yourself into a decent stack when not in use. The windows are more economical than glass, says the architectural specialist Jorge Leon.
Savings and a stone veneer gas fireplace (not shown) add rustic accents and the natural light of the skylights. The fireplace and the electrical terrace heaters mounted on the wall keep the room warm even in winter, while LED smart fans promote the cross-resolration in warmer seasons.
Long-lived Timbertech-Zungen and user floors have a look, but are actually a low-maintenance polymer made of recycled materials.
One of Kara's favorite functions includes a through opening with isolated Marvin windows, which connects the veranda with the kitchen. With children between the ages of 5 and 12, she says, it helps that the sink on the kitchen side of the opening is located. “As a mother of four children, I spend most of the time in front of the sink. And when we have parties on the veranda, I feel part of the action.”
A quartz switch on the veranda offers additional space for serving serving in the buffet style.
The veranda furnishings include an extendable dining table and a clippings, both from pottery rods. Barstools from Serena & Lily turn 360 degrees, as are the Huntington All-Weather Wicker Chairs. Sunbrella slipprover on the sofa and chairs are easy to clean.
Bonus: While the veranda improves the function and value of the house, it is not regarded as a conditioned space and therefore does not add any taxable square meter number, says Gizem Ozkaya, director of project development at Case.
“The room works well for family and entertainment,” says Jamie, including meetings of up to 25 adults. “When the passage and the doors are open, the veranda and the kitchen feel like a large room.”
