The last full moon of the year – also known as the “Cold Moon” – lit up the skies over America on Thursday evening.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its orbit, a point called perigee, making it appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.

NASA points out that the term “supermoon” is not an official astronomical term, but describes the event as “a full moon that reaches at least 90 percent of perigee.”

The Cold Moon, also known as the “Long Night Moon,” follows the Harvest Moon in October and the Beaver Moon in November.

The first full moon of 2026 will be on January 3rd – the Wolf Moon – named for the howling of wolves, which do not hibernate during these months.
