Well done, very good! The Torino Film Festival has announced the winner of its best film award, which went to Morgan Knibbe's “Garden of Earthly Delights” for best film. The film was also awarded 20,000 euros. It tells the story of teenager Ginto, who lives in the slums of Manila and dreams of becoming a gangster one day.
The jury, consisting of Ippolita di Majo, Lolita Chammah, Wannes Destoop, Sergei Loznitsa and Giona Nazzaro, also recognized “Ida Who Sang So Badly Even the Dead Rose Up and Joined Her in Song” and awarded it the Special Jury Prize (along with €7,000). Directed by Ester Ivakič.
Marianne Métivier's “Ailleurs La Nuit” won best screenplay, while Sadie Scott and Maria Wróbel triumphed in the acting categories for “Fucktoys” and “Her Will Be Done,” respectively.
Brittany Shyne's “Seeds” was named best documentary because it “conveys with powerful images the daily life of a community forced to endure the hypocrisy of the law's words,” the jury argued. They also recorded “Coexistence, My Ass!” out of. and Pippo Delbono’s “Bobò.”
In addition, following the popular Paul Newman retrospective – where festival-goers Marcello was able to see every single film – the festival also announced next year's star: Marilyn Monroe.
“She was not just an actress, but a legend, a shining icon of the collective imagination. The image selected for the 44th Turin Film Festival was taken during her last photo shoot, just a few days before her death. It captures both beauty and fragility, conveying a sense of nostalgia for the future, as if she knew that she was destined to live in eternity and not the present,” said artistic director Giulio Base.
The retrospective coincides with her 100th birthday.
Speaking of stars: While Vincent Lindon accepted the festival's biggest award, the Stella della Mola Award, on the closing evening, stars such as Juliette Binoche, Spike Lee, Antonio Banderas, Jacqueline Bisset and Vanessa Redgrave also met at the Italian event this year.
Although frail, the 88-year-old presented her son's film The Estate, in which she stars alongside husband Franco Nero – although she was quick to correct a presenter during a press conference.
“You shouldn't say 'your son'. It's the director of the film, Carlo Nero,” she said dryly. Base called Redgrave “one of the best actresses in the world” and also praised her outspokenness and activism.
“I'm so glad that these international stars were so generous with us. They now know about the festival and are telling their Western colleagues about it,” said Tiziana Rocca, who is in charge of global talent and international relations.
“They kept saying they could relax and were very happy with those who welcomed them to our cinemas. The audience was so warm and so numerous. They were also very enthusiastic about the city itself. It makes me happy that so many of them are arriving here for the first time and experiencing this wonderful place.”
“American Pie” veteran Jason Biggs debuted his directorial debut “Untitled Home Invasion Romance” — and his brand new Italian passport. Terry Gilliam was also in attendance and caused quite a stir at a surprise screening of the critically acclaimed film Marty Supreme. The stunned onlookers formed a long, long line to secretly take a selfie with him.
“When I was 23 years old and [working] At a film festival, Terry Gilliam allowed me to show “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” for the first time in Italy. Thank you, Terry,” said Andrea Romeo of I Wonder Pictures before “Marty Supreme.”
“The tagline of this film is 'Dream Big' and this festival also dreams big.”
