Delhi plans to extend the Munak Canal flyover through a 4 km tunnel to Kashmere Gate, creating a signal-free corridor to ease traffic congestion in north Delhi and reduce travel time by 40 percent.
New Delhi: To create a smooth and signal-free corridor from the Delhi-Haryana border to central Delhi, the Rekha Gupta-led government in the national capital is planning to extend the proposed Munak Canal flyover to Kashmere Gate through a 4 km tunnel between Inderlok and the ISBT. It will also ease traffic jams in Mukarba Chowk and Azadpur. The officials are currently preparing a detailed project report (DPR), a media report said. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said the project could reduce travel time by up to 40 percent.

An official said the Public Works Department (PWD) has started preparing the DPR as part of its ongoing efforts to expand road infrastructure and address long-standing traffic problems in north Delhi, The Times of India reported. The new corridor will be directly connected to ISBT, Outer Ring Road and Wazirabad Corridor. It will reduce travel time for vehicles from Sonipat, Rohtak and Urban Extension Road while reducing bottlenecks at Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur and Roshanara Road.
In September, Delhi took over the 20 km stretch from Bawana to Inderlok from Haryana to better manage the canal, an important water artery of the city. The proposed project will start from Bawana-Narela road and the PWD has already conducted site visits.
The minister described the project as a big step towards long-term sustainable urban mobility. “Delhi needs forward-thinking and innovative solutions to meet the growing infrastructure needs of its citizens,” Verma said.
PWD is working with other departments to ensure the project fits into Delhi's broader infrastructure and transport plans. “The corridor will come as a big relief to commuters from north and north-west Delhi as well as those traveling from Haryana,” Verma added.
The authorities have started a feasibility study. Planners will also look at structural features, lane layouts and intersection designs while preparing three conceptual development plans, an official said.
