I am writing to share with our community the outstanding support, service and attention that Southampton Town Trustee Joseph McLoughlin has shown to the waterways in the Town of Southampton.
Mr McLoughlin has proactively reached out to community groups across the North Sea, supporting our freshwater lakes, ponds and bays, introducing himself and offering support. He has facilitated meetings and facilitated communication with city trustees to ensure water quality status was communicated and needs were addressed, and coordinated with resources such as the Highway Department, the Community Preservation Fund and external thought leaders. His energy, insight, coordination skills and knowledge were invaluable.
Through Mr. McLouglin's efforts with the trustees and the Town Highway Department, new stormwater drains are in place at critical points around Little Fresh Pond. This is the first phase of an improvement initiative to improve long-term water quality. Data from the Surfrider Foundation's Blue Water Task Force shows that these stormwater drains have reduced, and at times eliminated, the flow of street runoff into our waterways.
Mr. McLouglin has also supported other initiatives to install bioswales and rain gardens at public access points. All of this is because he is committed to providing support and value to our community through his knowledge and interests.
Mr. McLouglin had attended all club and community meetings in our region, accompanied volunteers in collecting water samples for Surfrider BWTF analysis, and learned about the types of testing being conducted, including the state Department of Environmental Conservation's water characterization programs. He is truly committed to his role as a trustee.
I highly recommend Joseph McLoughlin for re-election to City Council to continue the positive path to improving water quality in our community.
