“Why are people like this?”

Climate awareness starts with respect for nature, but too many people do not respect nature enough; Instead, they exploit the natural world and hinder the connections other people make with nature and its inhabitants.

A Redditor posting on the r/CasualUK subreddit highlighted people's disrespect for the world around them with a series of photos showing tons of trash strewn across a body of water.

They wrote: “When I saw this tired looking young heron standing on a Lucozade bottle on Thursday morning I felt really sad so I borrowed a bin picker and went back this afternoon to clear away all the lazy people's drinks bottles, beer cans, crisp packets and e-cigarettes.” […] Why are people like that?”

Other Reddit users were appalled at the negligence of those who created so much trash and praised the original poster for cleaning it all up.

“I hate people who throw away so much trash. Really, thank you for taking the time to clean it up,” one person commented.

Another Redditor exclaimed, “People like you make me feel better about the world!!”

While some people believe that litter is not a big deal, it can cause great harm to wildlife and the environment, which ultimately affects humans as well.

The heron on the bottle may have tried to eat some of it, and if the bird had ingested any of it, it could have caused suffocation or an internal blockage from the plastic. Even if that hadn't happened, the heron would still have microplastics in its body. Encountering wild animals like this heron in nature should inspire people to protect nature and not abuse it.

Microplastics from trash also end up in our soil, water and ultimately our food, causing them to accumulate in our bodies. Since microplastics are permanent and scientists have linked them to health problems such as obesity and heart disease, this should be a concern for waste producers.

However, until more people decide to protect nature and therefore themselves, do what one Reddit user said: “Be the change you want to see in the world!”
