I remained designed by professionals inspired by vintage
  • I was designed in the Wickwood Inn, a boutique Inn in Saugatuck, Michigan, by Soucie Horner Design Collective.
  • The designers Martin Horner and Shea Soucie converted the historical house and entered the hospitality business and at the same time remained loyal to their roots in design.
  • Enter the Wickwood In the bottom with details on the design-filled design and the service-oriented stay.

When I arrived in Saugatuck, Michigan, I immediately felt his charm – a walk -in, filled with boutiques and art galleries, beautiful gardens and even a chain ferry in the city center.

No wonder that Shea Soucie and Martin Horner, main designer at Soucie Horner Design Collective, chose the spot as an entry point to the hospitality. The Wickwood Inn, a Bed & Breakfast in the heart of suction, represents the lifestyle of your brand.

“Obaning an inn was a life -long dream for us. It became a reality in Covid. We couldn't really travel, so we drove to many small cities and instead stayed in inn. It was our entertainment, but it was also our research,” says Horner.

From the transition of the historical house in Saugatuck's first bed and breakfast to the creation of a highly personalized and curated experience for every guest, Horner reveals her vision behind the inn. And after my stay, I can confidently say that it is as beautiful in real life as in photos.

When I entered the living room, I was immediately delighted by the antiques, gold accents and the cozy bar room. It felt like the perfect place to sit down with a cup of coffee, read a book or just relax. To just express it, it felt like at home.

“The bar area is the heart of the inn. It seems to be everyone's favorite place because it is small, dark and cozy and very enveloped,” says Horner. “Part of it is because we have worked very hard to keep the spirit of Julee Rosso-Dem former owner and co-author of the Inn of the Inns of the very famous cookbook from the 1980s, in the rooms that the guests had loved so much over the years.”

According to Horner, Rosso had many interesting furniture and art that her team corresponds to her design style. The result? A room that feels familiar and yet refreshed.

Cozy in your guest room.

I was accompanied in my guest room, where I found a handwritten note that was specifically addressed to me. Better, chocolate from a nearby candy business was waiting on my bed. Everything about the room was comfortable – especially the mattress, which Horner says, are all handmade in England.

“Each room is luxurious, comfortable, filled with high-end atomicities and equipped with a curated collection of furniture, carpets, art and antiques. Each room also makes it clear that they remain in a saucepan, the decor reflects the colors of the sandy beaches, the dune grass, the water, the sunsets,” says Horner. “It also reflects the relaxed atmosphere of the city itself. This means that every room and guest suite has its own personality and is unique in terms of its individual decoration.”

I drooled over the food that was served to me days after my trip to Saugatuck. With farm-to-table breakfast on order, soft cookies near the bar and the daily fresh fruit, the Wickwood Inn was much more than an aesthetically appealing place to linger. It is a curated experience in which attention is outstanding for the guests.

“If you are greeted by fresh flowers in your room or want to enjoy a Paar massage without having to leave the inn or want to be reserved for dinner, we will do it. You don't get so carefully in a hotel,” says Horner.

Antique around the inn.

“We travel the world procurement of furniture, carpets, accessories and art of artisans and artisans around the world. It is part of our everyday life – we do it for our interior design customers, for our guests in the inn in the inn and even for our own houses.

Antiques in Wickwood are everywhere. The coolest part? Many of them are available to the guests for themselves to buy themselves and take them home.

“We would like to make it easy for the guests to bring an element of Soucie Horner Design into their own houses. We also sell selected amenities from our luxury brand partners who really enjoy our guests, such as our pillows – earn consistently enthusiastic reviews – together with our towels, bed linen and even the matrators who are sleeping for guests,” says Horner.

The bungalow is a new addition to Wickwood and is a house with three bedrooms next door (but still on the same property). It is perfect for families who stay in separate rooms in the same home and still feel connected to the inn.

“They share the same design style and the same level of quality; the same mix of antiques, carpets, art and accessories; the same marble wheels; the same mill profiles,” says Horner. “In short, the bungalow is a private home with the same characters and properties of the larger inn. Guests who spend the night in the bungalow can enjoy all services available in the Inn.”

The Pool House is located in the “backyard” of the Wickwood Inn and the Bungalow and is a charming place to be able to be able to watch friends and family for a cozy evening, regardless of whether it is a television or a board game.

“It is basically a bright, airy meeting point for our guests,” says Horner. “You can meet for a cozy family game evening, organize a private dinner for eight people or hold small meetings. It is also a good place to watch away.”
