The Hartland Township Planning Commission approved the location plan submitted by Cromaine District Library on Thursday to improve the space in which numerous community events, programs and concerts take place.
The area known as the “Cromaine Commons” is a main goal of the library's strategic plan, which includes increasing its outdoor spaces. Cromaine Commons re -introduces the South Lawn of the library as a pulsating community square, which is intended to support the round, learning and celebration of annual rounds.
Cromaine Commons comprises a 20 × 40 open pavilion for concerts, programs and events. Landscape design with canopy trees, shrubs and irrigated plant beds; Paver terraces and seating areas of the sidewalk to read, relax and small meetings; and decorative fences and location lighting for a safe and inviting feeling.
“This project reflects what we have heard loudly and clearly: Our community appreciates the connection, enrichment and joint experiences,” said library director Sarah Neidert. “We have an honor to start this next chapter in the village of Hartland.”
Builded on the community of feedback from the community
This project follows an extensive input process. In autumn 2023, Cromaine worked with the rethinking of libraries to collect feedback through surveys and stakeholder meetings. Almost 1,200 community members informed their ideas and pressed the desire for outdoor, more flexible and more family-friendly.
A place for all seasons and all age groups
From concerts under the pavilion to outdoor stories, shady reading peaks and neighborhood events, the new Cromaine Commons will be a real cornerstone of the community.

What's next
There will be an open bid process for the necessary work with a goal of a completion date in the summer of 2026. Project updates are shared at www.cromaine.org and on social media in the course of progress.
