Note from the publisher: Once a month, Osu Extension Master Gardener Gärtner in Franklin County Profile a system that naturally appears in central -hio.

If the prairies and wetlands in Ohio had a celebrity, it would be Joe Pye Weed – big, charming and always surrounded by fans. This local congestion, scientifically known as Eutrochium purpleis the life of the late summer garden party, which is up to 7 feet tall and crowned with fluffy, Mauva-spherical flower clusters, which butterflies simply cannot resist. The vanilla fragrance doesn't hurt either! With robust stems and a statuensque form, Joe Pye Weed adds a vertical drama to every landscape.

But this plant is not just a show stopper – it has a story. The name “Joe Pye Weed” is said to Ehren Joseph Shauquethqueat, a Mohican Sachem from the 18th century. He was a respected guide and ally for colonial figures, including George Washington. Folklore suggests that he may have used this plant medically to treat typhoid fever, even though the details are fatty and probably romanticized. Regardless of whether he was the original herbist behind the name or not, the heritage of the plant continues as a healing herb in its common name.

Joe Pye Weed thrives in Ohios wet meadows, forest edges and Bach banks, where it absorbs the sun and shows its flowers from mid -summer to early autumn. It's not just a pretty face – it's an ecological power pack. Monarchs, swallow tails and bees flock to his nectar-rich flowers and make it an important pit stop on the pollinator. Even Kolibris come by for a sip. Caterpillars enjoy nibbling on the coarse, lance -shaped, dark green leaves, which grow up to 12 inches in swirls of three to four cars. Another positive? Deer tend to stay away! In winter, his seed heads offer food for birds and a sculptural silhouette against the snow.

Regardless of whether you are a gardener, a pollinator -enthusiast or just someone who appreciates a good comeback story (this plant was once overlooked as a “weed”), Joe Pye Weed is here to impress. It was born in Ohio, more approved from the butterfly and willing to bring a little wild magic into your garden.
