At the beginning of this year, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) announced expansion plans for Baghgra Airport in West Bengal. A new terminal will be built at the airport and the construction will be completed by March 2027. The first look of the new terminal is now out and shows textures, tones and calm of the landscape and culture of Bengal with the Himalaya serenity.

The architecture architecture company CP Kukreja Architects leads the design of the new terminal of the Baghogra Airport. They recently went to their Instagram to share the new terminal of the airport at first glance. The interiors of the airport mix the nature and culture of the region and reflect a dialogue between nature and movement.

According to the architecture company, the design of the new terminal is a piece of regional identity with resilient innovation. The new structure will be more than infrastructure, it shows “a dialogue between nature, culture and climatic -conscious design”.

The facade of the terminal has vertical aluminum fins and roofs, which were inspired by the Himalaya Foothills and the architectural heritage of Bengal. An important goal after Darjeeling, Gangtok and Kalimpong will serve and as soon as it is complete, it will be equipped for 1,000 passengers per hour!

The Instagram post also announced how the team plans to increase the challenges of the flood-prone terrain of the Baghogra Airport. They mentioned that they will apply robust damage limitation strategies such as through letters, owners and integrated drainage channels in order not to ensure any problems in the future.

Sustainable and climatic design

The new terminal of the Baghogra Airport is essentially designed with sustainability. Inspired by nature, the team aims at a net zero facility with a passive design, low-e glass and renewable energies to significantly reduce its environmental impact. They want to demonstrate how regional context and sustainability can influence the future of the Indian infrastructure. CP Kukreja Architects calls it a climate -friendly landmark that is rooted in place, and we are rooting your intention!
