The municipality of Chalakudy in the district of Thrissur has launched an ambitious initiative on roof colors, which already roots in almost 100 households. The residents convert their terraces into lively green spaces and cultivate everything, from bitter pumpkin to tomatoes as part of a wider advance for the municipal agriculture.

The campaign, referred to as Let us set up vegetable gardens togetherNot only aims at private roofs, but also rejuvenates public areas that are not buried. One of the outstanding efforts includes a community garden project on previously barren land in the Vijayaraghavapuram Kasthurba Center. This space is cultivated and maintained by members of the neighborhood collectives and the self-help group (SHG) of the community to Kudumbashree's Chalanam membership campaign.

The mission of urban agriculture is implemented by a decentralized network of 440 collectives of the neighborhood that work under the Kudumbashree Community Development Societies (CDS). Over 2,000 grows filled with a floor-manure mixture and vegetable nets have already been distributed in the community. The district mission made £ 1.85 to support the initiative and ensured that the financial and material support reaches every stop. During the introduction, various KUDUMBASHREEE and CDS leaders were present, which reflected the cooperative character of the initiative.

Apart from the promotion of local food production, the project is expected to serve as a model for other municipalities that aim to improve the resistance of food, reduce urban CO2 footprints and to promote more environmentally friendly living spaces. Agriculture on the roof in particular is a scalable solution for the uncertainty of urban food, while at the same time reduces the heat islands and improves the air quality – an approach that is aligned with sustainable development goals.

Officials of the Kudumbashree mission said that the program also complements the six-month long Chalanam Membership judges, with which the CDS network is to be strengthened and positioned as an excellence center for urban livelihood and self-sufficiency. With every participating family that contributes to the collective harvest of the community, the campaign promotes stronger relationships between ecological well -being and strengthening the community. This locally motivated green revolution also repeats the traditional essence culture of Kerala, the resident in particular women-to generate chemically free vegetables and to reduce the dependence on market-crew-up supply chains. The program is a tangible example of how basic environmental measures can support more extensive goals of zero -carbon cities, gender capital and sustainable food systems.

When the first wave of cultivation begins to thrive, the roofs of CHALAKUDY are transformed into productive ecosystems together with households, collective and public spaces in an air-conditioned, low impact initiative. The municipality plants the seeds of a greener, independent urban future.
