Greensboro, NC – The demolition of the parking deck of the Bellemade Street in the city center of Greensboro began on Thursday, May 1st, and marked the end of a structure that has stood since 1989.
In February, the deck permanently unveiled problems that were bound by materials that were used in its construction. The demolition process is expected to take several months.
Now there are several road and lane closures:
-
Two lanes towards the south of the North Greene Street between the Bellemade Street and the Sternberger Place
-
East Bound Bellemade Street between North Elm and North Greene Street
-
The North Elm Street towards the south between the Bellemade Street and the Center City Park
The drivers should expect delays and consider alternative routes.
The removal of the deck has also influenced parking for the nearby tanger center. The members of the Broadway season are now parked on Church Street and Marriott Hotel Decks. Other visitors can use Eugene Street, Davie Street, Greene Street and February one Place Deck.
For many residents, the Bellemade deck organizes memories of community events, Broadway shows and visits to the city center. Lili Kajana, owner of the Dolce Aroma Coffee Shop, which is under the deck for 20 years, reflected: “It won't be over and it is no longer here.”
While future plans for the website are still being discussed, the place of the Bellemade deck remains intact in the history of Greensboro.
