Paul Tazewell supervised 140 employees as costume designers for the film version of the musical “Wicked”. In January he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the film, which contained a dress for Ariana Grande, which required 225 hours of work and 20,000 pearls for the top. He also designed the suits worn by the film -generated animals of the film.
The 60 -year -old Tazewell moved to the Prospect Heights in Brooklyn in 2018, just before his husband died. The proximity of his apartment with two bedrooms to the Prospect Park and in Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where he often walks on Sunday, helped him mourn.
“They were my point of contact to process a lot of things,” he said.
Mr. Tazewell, who for his work on “Hamilton” and an Emmy for “The Wiz Live!”, Currently designs costumes for “non-view”, a Steven Spielberg film.
DIY dogs The first thing I do and actually the first thing I do every morning is my yoga stretching. I don't go to a yoga studio regularly, but I was able to put together my own form of wake-up yoga from YouTube trainers and studios. It takes about half an hour. I probably turn down five times, which flowed a lot of blood into my head and prepared for the rest of the day. It is a way of centering my head and body and maintaining my physical well -being. My thought is if you don't use it, you will lose it. Especially at 60.
To-go cup I go to the kitchen and make a French press coffee. I try to get one in before going to the park. If not, there is a nice café in the neighborhood and a bakery, Ciao Gloria, and I sometimes meet my friend Deb there so that we can go with the park. When I'm alone, it is more of a speed walk. I have long legs. I'll make a loop and then go home.
In the mood Sometimes I have to run to the hardware store in Fifth and Bergen in Park Slope to record a few things. I do a homemade. Three or four months ago I bought a ranch house of the 1970s in Hillsdale, Ny, near life, where my friend Charles Lapointe lives. He is a reign designer who worked on most of my Broadway shows. I have known him since 2002 and use it quite exclusively on shows. When I go to the hardware store, I am looking for things like brass elements that I work in a kind of moodboard or collage that I put together for inspiration. I also look at marble and masonry, and an important element of the renovation will be wood. Lots of oak. I hope for a Japanese feeling.
Flexible food I will try to order something for lunch, maybe a salad before I go back to the apartment, depending on how full the index can. It is easy to pick up a nice salad from Ciao Gloria. I love to cook, but I rarely have the time and I don't buy food for a whole week because I never know what will appear. I also don't waste food. So I keep it flexible.
Youthful, mature I feel intermittent. I usually don't eat anything before wellness for me has become a great priority. Also maintains my building so that I can better fit into my clothes and have more confidence. When I get older, I appreciate this element much more in my life. If I don't take care of my body, I am not young as quickly as before. The feeling of feeling youthful has become really important because I have matured.
Connections In the afternoon in the apartment I will often try to plan meetings. It is rare to get together with friends. Social time with them is precious. In the afternoon FaceTime with my mother for 45 minutes. My mother was just 90 years old, and she and her partner Emma have made a wonderful life in Asheboro, NC in the past 35 years. We did not do facetiming until we have reached the Covid time, but it is important that I can connect. Communicating with them is something that I prioritize.
Culture Sleuth Later in the day I will do activities how to go to a museum. I saw the Alvin Ailey show in Whitney before it closed. To do such things has become more important in London since I was working on “Wicked”. The culture seemed so accessible and easy to do, and New York has a lot to offer, but I think it takes more planning. Part of it is exactly where the museums are. But I have to carry out more examinations and get more out there.
To friendship If I enjoy a cultural event with someone else, we could sit down somewhere and drink a coffee and chat a bit. And then it is prepared to meet a friend or friends later, depending on where that could be. There are many great restaurants in my street and in my neighborhood in Brooklyn. But there are also many wonderful restaurants that I often never know in Manhattan.
When I got my Oscar nomination, I went to Carota in the Grove Street with six others to celebrate. We had the opportunity to roast it in a large room full of energy, and I loved it. My friend Donna had held a gift voucher on Carota for two years, but she hadn't got a table. It's great to have friends who know where to go.
MAINTENANCE Sunday is still a night of school, so after being hugged and kissed and saying goodbye, I will go back to my apartment. Then it is all about closing. I will open my laptop and see which e -mails I have not taken care of and prepare my brain for what comes. It only binds loose ends before I shower and go to bed. I apply all my serums and eye stains for the bags under my eyes and just try to keep things. Hopefully it makes a difference. Then, shortly before going to bed, I put on my Zen sleeping noise on Spotify. That helps me to sleep. And I take my magnesium. That also helps.
