A stone wall makes a bathroom feel like a garden

This house is located in a once poor but now emerging district of Porto in northern Portugal. “My father's roots are Portuguese and when I bought the house, it was a way to connect to this side of my family again,” says François Lite. “When I saw it for the first time, it was severely renovated a few years earlier, without the right permits. It was a very dark house and there was no fundamental amenities. “

A (almost) outdoor shower

This bathroom opens for the garden and creates a shower that feels almost outdoors. The bottom of the bathroom is located outside the living room and climbs up the bottom of the walls with an influence on the bathroom generated with ceramic tiles in A-Weijo-style. A former round now feels like an expansion of the garden of the house. Mirror doors on steel frames mix into the stone wall and give a contemporary touch. They open in both directions with mirrors on both sides, so that the bathroom door reflects the terrace when it is open on the side of the living room.

His current owner is Tom Locatelli, one of the founders of the Rive Architects, which she renovated together with his partner. By placing the shower there, it enjoys a wealth of natural light. “We wanted to interrupt the rectangular floor plan with this bathroom, which is filled with light, especially in the morning,” explains the architect. He introduced himself a kind of “cocoon” that was separated from the rest of the unit by a translucent oval door, which makes it shine in the adjacent dining room. The floor, the walls and the ceiling are all completed in a pink, waxed concrete, which creates a feeling of softness. “Concrete is a material that develops over time and takes different feelings depending on the light,” explains Locatelli. “It has a unique warmth and texture.”

Tip to remember

Think from the box. Even unexpected parts of an apartment can be converted from a living room into a room for a shower like an arched window.

Follow a common motif

In Paris 18TH Arrondissement, there is a street that runs along a side of the Montmartre cemetery. On the sixth floor of a building on this street you will find an attic apartment that used to be a maid room. Anthony Authié from Zyva Studio initially renovated the apartment after completing the architecture school – it was his first professional project. “I was without the experience I have now. I used the project to work on a dream of mine and design my own hotel, ”recalls Authié. “It's just a room and it's tiny!”

A funny and very personal approach

Many of the elements in the apartment reflect the interests and life of Authié. For example, the strips in tiles in the bathroom are an indication of the outfits of the Dalton Brothers, characters in the Lucky Luke Series of cartoons and one of the obsessions of authia.
